Carmelite Wins Asia Level Girls Rights Ambassador Award

On July 29, 2022, the Garden of Hope Foundation-GOH, Taiwan, announced their list of winners of this year’s 2022 Asian Human Rights Award Winners. And Saba Sharma, a Class XII student of Carmel Convent School, Chandigarh was announced as the winner from India.

Throughout Asia, the Asian Girls Campaign of GOH invites partners to come together and find solutions to problems faced by girls. And nominate girls whose involvement in advocating girls/youth rights, commitment to their communities or creativity in finding social solutions sets positive examples to girls around the world. In this category Saba won the award because of her volunteer work with girls at Kitabghar– a centre supported by Carmel Convent School to empower marginalized adolescent girls of the slum settlement of Bapudham Colony, Chandigarh.

At Kitabghar, Saba with her younger sister Sana Sharma, manages a ‘Girls Parliament’ with 55 girls designated as ‘Parliamentarians’. To empower these girls debates, declamations, role-plays, street plays, a wall-newspaper jugnu, English language games and computer literacy classes. Saba in her free time also runs a YouTube channel E-gal by Sbana, in which they prepare and post motivational videos on girl’s rights.

In the first week of September Saba will first attend a Garden of Hope Foundation sponsored ‘Female Role Models’ Workshop’ and on October 1, 2022, the Taiwanese Ambassador in India, will honour her at Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India at New Delhi.
